Niger Library is like zoo for reptiles, ghost house – Students

The Director General of the Niger State Students Affairs, Comrade Bello Sherrif, has decried the terrible condition of the state library, explaining that it has become a zoo occupied by reptiles.

Sherrif stated this on Tuesday in a goodwill massage at the Annual Library Week 2023 organised by the Niger state chapter of the Nigeria Library Association.

Also speaking, the Senior Special Assistant to Governor Mohammed Bago on Library,  Hajiya Salamatu Usman, corroborated the assertion of the Director General, adding:  ” I visited the library complex yesterday and discovered that it was an eyesore. It is a ghost house and not a library.”

She promised to work in collaboration with the Director General Students Affairs to revive the facility and restore it to its past glory.

Speaking earlier, Comrade Bello Sherrif said he was saddened by the condition of the abandoned library house, adding that “this is as a result of years of neglect by past administrations.”

However, he explained that the new administration of Governor Mohammed Umaru Bago has decided to give deserved attention to the library and other issues concerning students in the state.

He promised that government will revitalise the library for the benefit of the citizens and the students.

The state chairman of the Nigeria Library Association, Dr Fatima Jibrin Abduldayan had lamented that that the association has been crying over the condition of the state library for years without listening ears from government.

She said the staff of the library have been operating in terrible conditions, including the use of under-trees, having been pursued by reptiles.
