Niger: CJ weeps over killing of court registrar by bandits

The Chief Judge of Niger state, Justice Halima Ibrahim Abdulmalik, Tuesday, wept over the brutal killing of a court registrar, Mallam Muhammad Namaru of the Sharia Court Ibbi in Magama local government of the state.

She said 15 courts, including 11 Sharia Courts and four Magistrate’s Courts have been shut down in the state due to insecurity and activities of bandits.

Addressing a special court session to mark this year’s legal week, the Chief Judge said the deceased was abducted in April this year from the court premises and brutally murdered later by bandits.

She said, “I will not conclude without referring to the issue of Insecurity in the state which has forced us to lose four Magistrate Courts.  I understand that 11 Sharia Courts have also been closed down as a result.”

However, emotions got the better mood of the Chief Judge when she began to announce the brutal killing of the court registrar by his abductors in the middle of her address.

“Worst still, on the 11th of April 2023, Mallam Muhammad Namaru, a Registrar of Sharia Court Ibbi was kidnapped at the court premises by armed bandits. He was later killed by his abductors,” she said, sobbing.

While praying for the repose of the soul of the departed, the Chief Judge pleaded with the state governor to grant scholarship to the children at late Muhammad Namaru.

She said, “May I call on the state government to extend its magnanimity to the family and to give the children of the deceased scholarship for their education.  This will not only help the family but will boost our resolve to unconditionally serve our state and our country.”

Also speaking, Governor Mohammed Umaru Bago urged the court session to observe a minute silence in honour of the deceased registrar.
