Naira notes: Again, governors drag Buhari to Supreme Court

Up to nine governors elected under the All Progressives Congress (APC) political platform and one of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) have taken President Muhammadu Buhari to Supreme Court over the current policy on naira.

This time around, Blueprint gathered, that the governors of Kogi, Zamfara, Kaduna, Cross River, Ondo, Ekiti, Ogun, Sokoto, Katsina and Lagos state are the plaintiffs asking the apex court to overrule the President on his latest pronouncement on the use of naira notes.

President Buhari had on Thursday February 16, 2023 directed the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) to plough back only N200 notes into circulation, alongside the new naira notes.

Dissatisfied with the latest development, the 10 states are asking the apex court to set aside President’s directive on the use of only N200 among higher naira notes denomination.

Before the recent directive, fewer number of states took the federal government to court where they secured injunction to stop CBN from implementing the withdrawal of old N200, N500 and N1000 notes.

Despite the Supreme Court stance, the country’s regulatory bank insisted on February 10 as deadline, after which old notes will cease to become legal tender.
