Lafia residents lament erosion menace, urge government intervention.

Residents of Ungwar Galadima community in Lafia local government area of Nasarawa state, Thursday appealed to governor Abdullahi Sule to come to their aid and save them from the seasonal nightmare of gully erosion.


Leader of the community, Galadiman Lafia, Alhaji Mohammed Jibrin, made the appealed in Lafia, described the level of erosion devastation on his people as worrisome and continued to unleash on them over the years.


Galadima explained that the menacing expansion of the gully had taken over 15 percent of the size of their lands which located in the ancient city of Lafia and called for government intervention as a matter of urgency.


“My people suffers the worst impact of the menace every rainy season” this was as a result of the abandoned drainage system embarked upon and all water channels in the Lafia metropolitan runs to the Amba rivers, constituting a serious water lodge around our houses in ungwar Galadima, and is causing a serious fair on our minds please governor Sule intervene you are a kind hearted leader that listen.”


He added that the menace has become a fast expanding gully erosion site which affects up to 30 residential homes and subjected to excessive degradation from rampaging gullies.
Galadiman Lafia stressed that both government agencies and politicians had been going to see the level of damage caused by the erosion in the area, but nothing has been done up to this moment.


“I wish governor Sule could hear me, I am very optimistic that once he hears this he will definitely take his time to come over and see things for himself I have confidence in him that he can complete this abandoned drainage project that has causing serious fair in us.


Blueprint observed that sometimes last year the past administration during it working visit to some of these areas segregated by the erosion, was committed to ensue synergy with the federal ministry of environment for the released of ecological aid to tackle erosion in the state.


It was also observed that in August 2017, after series of complaints by the community a team of ecological experts from ecological fund office, from the presidency led by Engr, Suleiman Umar visited the state to conduct census of ecological site across the state to have first hand information on the ecological problem in the state.
