Kuje council berates residents over refuse heaps

Growing heaps of refuse and waste in some parts of Kuje area council have been attributed to the non-challant attitude of residents of the council.
Head of Department (HOD), Environment, in the council, Abdulrazaq Abdulkarim, while interacting with journalists in his office during evacuation of waste and drainages, said the growing heaps of refuse across some communities in the council was due to neglect by residents.
He said despite Hon. Shaban Tete’s administration’s activities to manage waste and clean environment, “some people are shying away from their constitutional responsibilities.”

The HOD maintained that the council was trying its best in terms of creating awareness, but lamented that “when we clean up, people dispose refuse immediately because they know it is dumped by government.”
He said recently a mobile court sitting in Kuje convicted some people for allegedly violating sanitation rules.
Abdulkarim emphasised that sanitation exercise should be observed daily, right from homes, and warned against laxity and deceit amongst residents, stressing that “sincere approach to sanitation exercise is a panacea to the health of every society.”

He called on residents of Kuje area council for a change of attitude on refuse dumping and advised them to join hands with the administration of Hon. Ishaku Shaban Tete for the development of council.
He added that a meeting his department and some village heads, the SSS and stakeholders were held, especially on the issue of Chibiri community where pollution caused by poultry farmers in the area was settled.
He said any tenant in the council that “builds houses without toilet facilities is mandated to do so to prevent outbreak of deadly diseases.”
