INEC begins Melaye’s recall April 28

The Independent National Electoral Commission, Kogi state yesterday announced that it will commence the recall process of embattled Senator Dino Melaye, representing Kogi West on April 28.
The state Resident Electoral Commissioner, Prof James Apam, who disclosed this during a stakeholders meeting in Lokoja yesterday, said the decision followed the Appeal Court ruling that INEC can commence the recall process.
He revealed that the commission has fixed April 28, 2018 for verification of signatures and also fixed May 5, 2018 for conduct of referendum in line wiThelectoral laws.
According to him, “On this day, the commission will endeavour to invite all those who have signed the recall register to come forward and identify their signature.
” He added that if the process is successful, the commission will proceed to the next stage where a referendum of all registered voters would be conducted.
“Here, voters will be asked to vote either ‘yes’ or ‘no’ to the question of whether they want Senator Dino Melaye recalled; if the answer is able to meet the constitutional requirements of 51 per cent yes, the process ends with recall of the senator.
The appellate court last week threw out Dino Melaye’s suit challenging the move to recall him.
Meanwhile the embattled senator has vowed to proceed to the Supreme Court in a bid to stop INEC from proceeding with the process.
On the Continuous Voter Registration, Prof Apam said 210,000 Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs were ready for collection but worry that owners had refused to come forward to collect them.
