No fewer than 70 farmlands have reportedly been destroyed by hailstorm (ice pellets) in some villages of Shagari local government area of Sokoto state.
Chairman of the local government, Alhaji Jabbi Shagari, disclosed this to newsmen in Sokoto yesterday.
According to him, the affected villages include Gangam, Illela and Lambar -Yabo, among others.
He said: “The disaster had destroyed assorted farm products believed to be worth hundreds of thousands of naira.
“It had also affected no fewer than 10,000 square meters of farmlands and it destroyed millet, guinea corn and others.”’
Shagari said the local government council had set up a four-man committee to investigate the extent of damage caused by the disaster.
The committee would also find out the actual numbers of farmers and farmlands affected.
Shagari further said the committee would also recommend the form of assistance to be rendered to the victims.
