Guinea Bissau conquer Sao Tome and Principe, topple Nigeria’s Super Eagles on AFCON qualifier log

Guinea Bissau conquered São Tomé Principe 1-0 on Wednesday to toppled Nigeria’s Super Eagles on AFCON qualifier log.

Zinho Gano scored the only goal of the encounter 10 minutes into the second half at the Estádio 24 de Setembro in Bissau to secure all the three points for the Djurtus.

With the victory, Guinea-Bissau took a significant step towards reaching their second straight AFCON after also qualifying for the last edition of the tournament in Cameroon in 2021.

They are now on top of qualifying Group A with 10 points from five matches, one more point than Nigeria who have played four games.

If the Super Eagles avoid defeat against Sierra Leone in Monrovia, Liberia on Sunday, both Nigeria and Guinea-Bissau will advance to the 2023 edition of the tournament billed for Cote d’Ivoire in January and February 2024.

As things stand, Sierra Leone have five points and must beat the Super Eagles to stay in contention for one of the two tickets available to the group.

The last time both teams met in Abuja last year, the Super Eagles came from behind to beat the Leone Stars 2-1, with Victor Osimhen and Alex Iwobi scoring the goals.

Sao Tome have only one point and have already been eliminated from the race.
