Ganduje signs agreement to build 5,000 houses for teachers

Following his declaration of free education and improved welfare for teachers and other civil servants in Kano state, Governor Abudullahi Umar Ganduje Thursday signed an agreement to build five thousand houses for teachers.

 The agreement was signed by the Kano state commissioner for Justice, Mohammed Lawan, on behalf of the government while director general of Family Homes, Femi  Adewole, signed on behalf of the company.

 Speaking Thursday in Abuja, Governor Ganduje, said his administration was doing its best to restore the dignity of education in the state.

He also said the state government has changed  retirement age from of teachers from  60 to 65 and age of civil servants from 35 to 40 years.

He stated that when he declared free and compulsory education  in primary and secondary schools in the state, the intention was to make education accessible for the downtrodden.

 He said since 2015, Kano has never missed the payment of counterpart funding for the Universal Basic Education (UBEC), and his administration has been making available 26% of its annual budget for the education. 

 According to him, the British Council is currently assisting the state to train and retrain the teachers on the new method of teaching to improve quality of education.

 “You know we used to have GRA, now we have TRA (Teachers Reserve Areas) to restore the dignity of education in the state.”

The senator representing Kano central, Ibrahim Shakarau, said the housing project is dear to the development of education, adding that of all the projects so far executed, the welfare of the teachers which include housing project is the best.

 Kano state commissioner for education, Mohammed Sanusi Kiru, commended the governor saying: “In all the states of the federation, there is no state investing in education like Kano.”
