FSARS reform: IGP monitoring team arrive Edo

The Inspector General of Police, (IGP) Ibrahim Idris special committee to ensure compliance with rules of engagement of the reformed Federal Special Anti-Robbery Squad (FSARS) has arrived Benin City, the Edostate capital.
The commissioner of Police, Johnson Kokumo who stated this at a media briefing Wednesday said the committee is headed by ACP Austine Balaba adding that he would be in-charge of FSARS operations in South-South states.
He stated that ACP Balaba had visited cells in the command and interviewed suspects in order “to ensure that their rights are not in any way abused”.
Kokumo said the special committee is part of measures adopted by the Inspector General of Police, (IGP) Ibrahim Idris geared towards the overhauling of defunct Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) as directed by the Presidency on August 8.
According to him, the IGP is leaving no stone unturned on the presidential directive to ensure that the order is complied with.
The CP explained that the unit has been renamed Federal Special Anti-Robbery Squad (FSARS) and would comply with the directive order 237 on the use of firearms. He said: “The aim is to ensure that there is no indiscriminate use of FSARS and ensure that operatives would have respect for human rights.
“The activities of FSARS will be strictly monitored by the CP of Edo, and if there are complaints, it should be reported to the CP on 081266606.
