FG to promote bamboo cultivation, utilisation in Nigeria

The Federal Government is taking significant step towards a greener and more sustainable future for Nigerians by promoting bamboo cultivation and utilization.

The Minister of Environment, Mallam Balarabe Abbas Lawal, made this known on Wednesday to commemorate this year’s World Bamboo Day in Abuja.

He added that Bamboo, often referred to as the “green gold,” has been an integral part of our culture and heritage for centuries. It has proven to be a true gift of nature considering its versatility and numerous environmental and economic benefits.

According to him, Bamboo plays a crucial role in combating climate change. Its ability to sequester carbon dioxide and release oxygen surpasses that of many other plant species. 

“It also offers opportunities for economic growth and poverty alleviation and Its diverse applications in different sectors of the economy make it a valuable resource for job creation and income generation. 

Speaking, commissioner of Environment Kogi state, Mr Victor Omofaiye, states that Kogi state is the highest produces of Bamboo.

“Bamboo will reduce the emission of the country, add value to the economy of the country and reduce the challenge of climate change.

The Director of Federal Department of Forestry, Federal Ministry of Environment, Mrs Hajara Umar Sami, said that bamboo is used to restore land, use for conservation to reduce emission and address the challenge of climate change.

” We will develop a policy and present to the National Council of Environment and develop a road map.

Earlier in his remark, Director, overseeing Office of the Permanent Secretary, Mr Lawrence Adigwe, noted that bamboo has the potential to transform livelihoods, landscapes and ecosystems as the demand for bamboo products is steadily increasing, providing opportunities for economic growth, job creation, and poverty alleviation, particularly in rural areas where bamboo is abundantly available.

“Its rapid growth and ability to regenerate quickly, makes it a sustainable and renewable resource.

He, further added that we will enhance biodiversity and simultaneously contribute to climate change mitigation since bamboo is a carbon sink. 

Mr Adigwe urged everyone specially those at the forestry to harness the potentials of bamboo plant while also promoting its sustainable management practices.
