FG opens new National Meteorological Training Institute in Katsina


The federal government through the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has established a new National Meteorological Training Institute in Katsina state.


The Director General/ Chief Executive Officer Sani Abubakar Mashi during a media chat with newsmen on Thursday in Abuja said National Board for Technical Eductaion (NBTE) granted provisional approval for commencement of the programs.


The DG who was also speaking ahead of the forthcoming 2020 seasonal rainfall prediction further said their first batch of students shall resume in September 2020. 


According to him, this is not only the first in Africa , but the 2nd in the world beside the South American Training Institute in Ecuador.


Other parts of the agency’s achievement , the DG said they have also witnessed an increase from 54 to over 157 Meteorological stations which is still ongoing in all the books and cronies of the country.

He said theSeasonal Rainfall Prediction (SRP) would be unveiled to the general public in Abuja.

He said the 2020 Rainfall Prediction will highlight vital information that may affect socio-economic activities in the air. 

Others are land and water transportation, agriculture, water resources, disaster management and mitigation, tourism, sports, health, building and construction, energy sectors etc in the course of the year.
