Estate agent in court over N200, 000 fraud

A 45-year-old estate agent, Akeem Odejide, Monday appeared before an Ikeja Magistrates’ Court in Lagos, for allegedly obtaining N200, 000 with intent of getting accommodation.

Odejide, who lives in Ogun state, is being tried for obtaining money under false pretenses and stealing.

The prosecutor, Inspector Emmanuel Ajayi, told the court that the defendant committed the offences in December 17, 2019, at Ilupeju, Lagos.

He said the defendant obtained the money from Mrs Agatha Amata under the pretext of getting an accommodation for the children of one of her employee who is late.

“After he, defendant, collected the money, he was nowhere to be found.

“Efforts made by the complainant to get the apartment or retrieve the money proved unsuccessful as the defendant refused to pick her calls.

“The defendant was later apprehended and handed over to the police,” the prosecutor said.

The alleged offences, Ajayi said, contravened Sections 287 and 314 of the Criminal Law of Lagos state, 2015.

Section 287 prescribes three years’ jail term for stealing, while Section 314 attracts 15 years for obtaining money under false pretense.

Following his plea of not guilty, Magistrate Mrs O.O Fagbohun released the defendant on bail of N100, 000 with two sureties in like sum.

Fagbohun said the sureties should be gainfully employed and show evidences of two years’ tax payment to the Lagos state government.

The magistrate fixed further hearing for March 16. (NAN)
