Ekiti youths protest 2 months power outage

Youths of Ikere-Ekiti, headquarters of Ikere local government area, tormed the streets of the town with placards of various inscriptions, protesting two months electricity blackout.

Economic activities were paralysed as the youth blocked the major roads linking Ado – Ekiti, the Ekiti state capital and Akure, the Ondo state capital, which resulted in a serious traffic snarl.

According to eyewitnesses, the angry youths complained that power companies threw the entire town into total darkness.
It was gathered that some policemen from Ikere Division were seen advising the protesting youths to avoid violence while carrying out their protest.
Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) ASP Victor Babayemi, in response to the protest, said: “We heard about the protest and we quickly deployed our men there to ensure it does not get out of hand.

He added: “The youths are protesting continuous power outage in the town. We are managing the situation. We have not made any arrest, because we believe the youths have constitutional right to protest as long as they are not violent in the cause of carrying out their right.
“But we are making sure that the situation doesn’t get out of hand. So our men are fully in control of the situation.”
