Day of African Child: SCI advocates safe, accessible digital environment

In commemoration of the 2023 Day of the African Child Save the Children International Nigeria (SCI) has called for a safe and accessible digital environment for children to learn and grow up healthy.

SCI Director, Advocacy, Campaign, Communication and Media, Amanuel Mamo, made the call during the celebration in collaboration with the Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Development, in Abuja on Friday.

He said it was not debatable that digital technologies play a critical role in boosting quality and access to education.

According to Mamo, the theme for the celebration: “The Rights of the Child in the Digital Environment” reminds stakeholders and duty bearers to be accountable to progress being made in adopting policies to protect children.

He urged duty bearers to reflect on what more needed to be done to effectively promote the right of children for quality and safe access to e-learning.

He said the digital space comes with huge opportunities and challenges for sure, but it brings more prospects if it is maximised for the growth and development of children.

The director noted that the internet has provided invaluable opportunities for the realisation of children’s fundamental rights and freedoms such as the right to education, freedom of expression, and freedom of association, among others.
