COP28: Reps committee target $1bn funding commitment

The Deputy Chairman, House Committee on Environment, Hon. Terseer Ugbor, has revealed that the House Committee target at the forthcoming 28 Conference of Parties (COP28) in Dubia is to get one-billion-dollar funding commitment for Nigeria.

Just as Nigeria will be seeking the activation of the $100 billion loss and damage funding and championing enhanced and equitable climate action and finance distribution at the COP 28.

Ugbor revealed this at the One-day National Stakeholders Pre-COP28 Workshop organised by Oxfam Nigeria in conjunction with the National Council on Climate Change (NCCC) in Abuja on Thursday.

Addressing the delegates, Ugbor promised that the House Committee is proposing the conversion of the Council into a commission for proper funding.

He said Nigeria target at the COP28 would be to secure sustainable funding mechanisms to support climate adaptation initiatives and ensure their successful implementation.

While also enhancing the capacity and technical skills of stakeholders involved in climate adaptation to effectively address climate challenges.

Also speaking the NCCC Director-General, Dr. Dahiru Salisu, said the workshop is apt as Nigeria needs to present a common front at the conference and strive to ensure that it secure funding from partners.
