Constitution review: Reps announce dates, centres for zonal public hearing

The special committee of the House of Representatives on the review of the 1999 constitution, has fixed Tuesday 1st and Wednesday 2rd June 2021 for its zonal public hearing scheduled to take place across the six geopolitical zones of Nigeria.

The committee led by Deputy Speaker of the House, Idris Wase has for that reason invited the general public, executive and judicial bodies, traditional institutions, political parties, civil society organisations, professional bodies and all other stakeholders to participate in the exercise.

A statement by Wase’s spokesman, Umar Pumar on Monday explained that two hearing centres have been approved for each of the geopolitical zones.

According to the statement, for the north central zone; Jos, the Plateau State capital will host stakeholders from Plateau, Benue, Nasarawa State and the FCT, while Lokoja will serve as the second centre, with attendees from Kogi, Niger and Kwara States.

The northeast has Bauchi as centre, which is made up of Bauchi, Borno and Yobe states, while Yola plays host to stakeholders of Adamawa, Taraba and Gombe States.

Birnin Kebbi has been named as one of the centres for the north east, with Kebbi, Zamfara and Sokoto states; Kano is expected to host attendees from Kano, Kaduna, Katsina and Jigawa States on the 2nd and 3rd of June, 2021.

The Southeast which has Enugu centre, to host Enugu, Anambra and Ebonyi states, while Owerri centre will host Imo and Abia states.

The South west with a centre in Akure, will host Ondo, Ekiti and Osun states, while Lagos centre will host Lagos, Oyo, and Ogun states.

The South-south zone will hold in Asaba centre on 2rd and 3rd June comprising Delta, Bayelsa and Edo states, while Uyo centre holds on 1st and 2rd June, with Akwa Ibom, Rivers and Cross River states SA catchment.
