Cholera: 703 infected in FCT, death toll rises to 60

The Federal Capital Territory Administration has flagged off a sensitisation programme on cholera and other severe acute diarrhea diseases in Abuja Municipal Area Council as the death toll of the disease has risen to at least 60.

Speaking at the flag off ceremony in Pyakasa, Monday, FCT Minister of State, Ramatu Aliyu disclosed that a total of 703 cases of cholera disease have been reported  while the death toll has risen to 60 as against the 604 cases and 54 deaths recorded last week.

Represented by Acting Secretary FCT Primary Health Care Development Board, Iwot Ndeayo, Aliyu revealed that, the cholera outbreak was recorded in 32 out of the 54 wards in the FCT.

According to Aliyu, who expressed concerns over the increasing number of cases since May 2021, the FCT Administration is committed to stopping the ugly trend from spreading in the area.

In his remark, the Chairman of Abuja Municipal Area Council, Abdullahi Candido, noted that the area council upon receiving the news of the outbreak of cholera, released fund to equip the Primary Health Care to be able to respond to the disease.

While expressing the commitment of the council to end the outbreak, Candido noted that adequate sensitisation was being carried out in all the 12 wards of AMAC on the disease.
