Brain drain: UITH, NANNM meet Mustapha over depleting number of nurses

The National Association of Nigerian Nurses and Midwives (NANNM) University of Ilorin Teaching Hospital (UITH) chapter has asked the senator representing Kwara Central, Mallam Saliou Mustapha, to champion a bill that will promote better welfare package to halt the trend of brain drain amongst nurses.

The association also urged the lawmaker to support the training of youth  and ensure they are certified in basic life support skills.

The NANNM- UITH chapter chairman, Nurse Ayinla Kazeem, tabled the  association’s  concerns when he led other executive members on a courtesy call on the senator on Monday.

Kazeem acknowledged Turaki’s  donation to the UITH’s  School of Nursing in the recent past and charged him do more for nurses by lending his voice to “nurses’ friendly initiatives and bills” to halt the trend of brain drain in Nigeria.

The association also emphasised the need for government at all levels to focus on schools and malls with the necessary supply of Automated Electronic Defibrillators (AEDs) in order to enlighten and equip  our community with specific first aid skills.”

Responding, the  senator commended nurses’ commitment to the well-being of every nation, their diligence in what they do, and closeness to their patients beyond any other health professional.
