Between leadership and vision

I am compelled to talk about the governor of Sokoto state, Dr Ahmed Aliyu,  because it is time we sang the praises of our heroes in the new democratic dispensation. And the reason for doing so is to encourage our leaders to do more for the people.

The coming of Governor Aliyu to Sokoto Government House is a blessing to us. He has shown to us the meaning of humanity and what public trust means. We can now say, without mincing words, that the few months he has been running our state are very eventful, and have shown that a lot of promise is in store for the people.

This is a public officeholder who has charted a new path in the political terrain of Nigeria. He has defined the meaning of mere leadership and vision. His attention to the people and finding solution to their immediate needs cannot be diverted by the pecks of office.

He makes sure the people are the centre of his policies. For this reason he hit the ground running to attend to societal classes in need one after the other.

May I talk more of Governor Aliyu’s commitment in the area of power generation?

No state or country can prosper without adequate power supply for technicians, entrepreneurs and artisans to express themselves in their trades. Bearing this in mind, Governor Aliyu turns swiftly to power generation to the state.

The APC-led administration of Sokoto state, unlike other states of the federation, has shown its dedication to securing uninterrupted electricity supply, being aware of its crucial role in driving socio-economic, agricultural, and technological progress in a democracy.

It is gladdening that the state Commissioner for Energy and Petroleum Resources, Sanusi Danfulani, shortly after visiting the Goronyo Dam project, disclosed that the state governor, Dr Aliyu, had approved N2 billion to complete the 35 MW Independent Power Project initiated by the administration of Senator Aliyu Wamakko, which has long been abandoned.

As if that is not enough, the governor similarly approved N3 billion for solar energy project for the state.

Sokoto state under Governor Aliyu is collaborating with foreign energy companies to source five hydroelectric megawatts from the Goronyo Dam to complement the state-owned Independent Power Project, which will soon be put to use.

The Goronyo Hydropower project is capable of providing 25 megawatts, but the government decided to use only five megawatts to allow the agricultural sector to flourish because of the importance of agriculture as a vehicle to a nation’s growth and development.

Dr. Aliyu’s dream for the state is quickly coming to reality, and it is to surmount all electricity supply challenges with the purpose of attracting investors and give Sokoto state aggressive transformation that will engender economic growth and development.

No meaningful growth and development can take place with epileptic power supply as is currently the case in Nigeria, so the governor’s effort to provide electricity is to uplift the welfare of the people and economic viability of Sokoto state via socio-economic and agricultural productivities. By the foregoing, our support to Governor Aliyu is a state duty we must perform.
