Benue politician arrested over gun running

gun-runningA politician in Benue state (names withheld) has been arrested for allegedly supplying arms and ammunition to armed robbers for their operations.
The arrest is coming on the heels of lamentations from Governor Gabriel Suswam who recently decried what he called the growing crime rate in Makurdi metropolis, charging the police to “do something about it.”
Suswam, while commissioning a radio network integration system and generators at the police command’s headquarters in Makurdi, called for collaboration to reduce criminal activities in the state.

But sources at the police investigating department hinted that confessional statements from a team of five robbers led by “pastor” from Kwande who had been terrorising the state led to the arrest of the politician.
The robbers, it was learnt, confessed to using the weapons to carry out successfully, five operations before they were picked up by men of the CID.

It was also gathered that the politician, who is also running for an elective position, was arrested in Makurdi at his business premises, but later granted bail in the sum of N500, 000 with a chieftaincy titleholder in his local government as surety.
Fielding questions from journalists in his office, the Commissioner of Police in charge of Benue state command, CP Adams Audu, neither denied nor confirmed the incident, but simply said “when one is arrested over an allegation, but his involvement is not too heavy, he could be granted bail.”
