Banditry: 22 killed in fresh Zamfara attack

No fewer than 22 villagers were killed Tuesday by suspected armed bandits in Tungar Kwana village of Talata Mafara local government area of Zamfara state.

An eyewitness, Lawali Abubakar Tungar Kwana, in a phone interview with newsmen said the suspected bandits numbering over 100 besieged the village around 11pm and began to shoot people indiscriminately.

“During the attack, we lost 22 people, including children and women who were killed instantly, while others ran to the forest for safety,” Lawali said.

According to him, many people were injured as a result of gunshots and were currently in Talata Mafara General Hospital receiving treatment while an unconfirmed number of animals belonging to the community were also rustled by the bandits during the attack.

When contacted, the spokesperson of the state police command, SP Mohammed Shehu, confirmed the incident, adding that only 20 people were killed by the bandits.

Shehu stressed that, already, a joint taskforce of security personnel have been deployed to the scene for the restoration of peace in the area.
