APC crisis forces Buhari to postpone Zamfara campaign rally

President Muhammadu Buhari has postponed his campaign rally in Zamfara state scheduled to take place on Sunday in Gusau, the state capital.

Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Mr. Femi Adesina, confirmed the postponement.

Adesina declined to comment on why the president postponed the rally.

But Presidency sources said the postponement might not be unconnected with the lingering crisis in the state chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and the decision of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) not to allow the party to participate in the forthcoming elections for failing to meet deadline for conduct of primaries.

An Abuja Federal High Court had in a ruling last week upheld INEC’s decision in line with section 87 of the Electoral Act 2010 (as amended), and the electoral body on Thursday, January 31, 2019, released the final list of candidates for the elections excluding APC candidates from Zamfara state.

Meanwhile, Senator Kabiru Marafa (APC, Zamfara) said there was no need for the president to go to Zamfara for campaign.

Speaking to State House correspondents after a close-door meeting with the president on his office in Abuja, Marafa said the president’s foot-soldiers would campaign for him.

“Because of the rumple between disagreeing parties, we felt it is better Mr. President to suspend his visit to Zamfara. After all, we are there. We can campaign for him. He knows us; he knows our individual capacities; there is no point bringing all the factions under one umbrella, because once the president is there, if you like the president and you are with him, you will like to show your face,” he said.
