Anambra: How mystery fire killed student in dormitory when schoolmates were praying


Mysterious fire which gutted Patterson Memorial Grammar School, Awada, Onitsha in Anambra State, on Sunday night, had reportedly killed a class one student of Junior Secondary School (JSSI) of the school.
The deceased, Master Chigozie Dim Anyichie, aged 11, was in the school dormitory where the inferno wreaked havoc while his colleagues were observing their night prayers in the field.


According to the state Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), SP Haruna Muhammed, the Principal of Patterson Memorial Grammar School, Dr. Kajetan Anuforo, reported at Awada Police Station on Monday that the fire whose cause was yet to be ascertained occurred at about 10pm at a section of the school dormitory when the students were out in the field for night prayers.  “The fire which completely burnt down a dormitory block was eventually put off by the concerted efforts of the staff and students of the School. The Police detectives led by DPO Awada Division CSP Tony Adeyi visited the scene and took the victim to the hospital where he was certified dead by a medical doctor.


“Corpse photographed  and deposited at the mortuary for postmortem examination. The Commissioner of Police CP John B.Abang, has commiserate with family of the victim and ordered for a discreet investigations to ascertain circumstances surrounding the incident, please. The cause of the fire and value of property destroyed is yet to be ascertained,” he said.
