Amid coronavirus, cultists ‘kill’ six in Edo

A renewed cult war between black axe and Eiye confraternity groups have reportedly left six persons dead in Benin City, the Edo state capital.

The incident is coming despite partial lockdown and stay-at-home order by the state government, arising from the Covid-19 pandemic.

The violent reportedly started last week when one of the group members shot at a rival member who he claimed had killed several members of his group during a disagreement in 2019.

The incident was said to have occurred at one of the new generation bank outdoor Automated Teller Machine (ATM) along Uselu-Ugbowo road, a development that drew the attention of plane-cloth policeman on duty who immediately gunned down the assailant.

Blueprint gathered that apparently irked by the death of the unnamed member as a result of police shooting, other members were said to have carried out series of reprisal attacks in Medical stores and Okhoro roads in Benin City.

One person was reportedly lynched to death by mob along medical stores road after his unsuccessful attempt to hit his target while two others were said to have been feared dead near the Play House recreative centre at Okhoro road.

Two other persons were said to have been killed in on Monday night in two separate locations along Benin Technical College (BTC) road and Universal junction.

One of the victim identified simply as Odion, an Auto mechanic was reportedly shot dead at his workshop on Benin Technical College (BTC).

Similarly, an unidentified man was also shot dead on Monday night along mission road by Ugbague junction.

Policemen were seen evacuating the victim’s remain on Tuesday morning. 

Edo state Police Commissioner, Lawal Jimeta, had said some suspects have been arrested by the anti-cultism unit of the command, adding that investigation is ongoing.
