Allow us bury Pa Akinkunmi, family of National Flag designer cries out

The family of the late designer of the Nigeria National Flag, Pa Michael Taiwo Akinkunmi on Sunday urged government to allow them lay their late father to rest.

In a statement signed by Mr Akinwumi Akinkunmi, the family alerted that their late father was yet to be laid to rest months after his death amidst promises by the federal and the Oyo state governments.

According to the late Pa Akinkunmi family, if the federal and Oyo state governments are not interested in the burial of their late father, they should be allowed do it the little way they can “through the help of God and well meaning individual.

“This is to bring to the attention of concerned authorities and the general public that the body of the Nigeria National Flag Designer, Late Michael Taiwo Akinkunmi (O.F.R) is yet to be laid to rest as against some peoples’ thoughts.

“The initial date scheduled by the family for the burial ceremony was December 7th and 8th 2023 but was annulled by the State Government on the ground that none of the State Government officials was present when the date was picked.

“However, another meeting was held on November 29, 2023 by Oyo State 7th National Assembly with the deceased family and the conclusion was that a suitable date for the burial would be communicated to the family through a committee set up by the Government, which is taking till thy kingdom come now.

“Hence, it is worthy to note that the deceased family have no intention of dragging the Governments or having any entitlement mentality, but all we are saying is that if the Government is not interested in giving our National Icon, Michael Taiwo Akinkunmi (OFR) a befitting burial as promised, they should allow the family do it the little way they can through the help of God and well meaning individual. Thanks. God bless Nigeria.”

The family recalled in the statement that Pa Michael Taiwo Akinkunmi (O.F.R) died on 29th of August, 2023, saying, ” all thanks to His Excellency President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the Executive Governor of Oyo State, Engr. Oluseyi Abiodun Makinde who sent their condolences to the deceased family and also assured the family of giving a befitting burial to our National Icon.”
