AFCON 2023: Osimhen in support of Peseiro to lead Super Eagles

Victor Osimhen has backed coach Jose Peseiro to lead the Super Eagles to the 2023 AFCON in Cote d’Ivoire.

Peseiro’s initial one-year contract ran out on June 30 and the NFF hierarchy is yet to announce whether or not the contract will be extended.

“The coach is tactically sound and he is in control of the Super Eagles squad, which is very, very important,” Osimhen told Wazobia FM Radio Lagos.

“He knows what he wants.”

The Napoli striker also tipped the Super Eagles for “greatness” at the AFCON in Cote d’Ivoire in January.

“We have a great squad to do well, I’m proud of the team,” he said.

“We fight for the team because it’s a privilege to play for Nigeria.

“We expect greatness, we will aim for the trophy.

“We have experienced players and leaders like Ahmed Musa, Kenneth Omeruo and Wilfred Ndidi, who have been helpful to the younger players.

“I know some of the fans have given up on us (after the Eagles failed to qualify for the 2022 World Cup), but I hope they will come back to support us.

“They will see a different Super Eagles, we’re working very hard.

“We will have a good tournament and if God wills, we will win it.”

Osimhen picked out skipper Ahmed Musa for special mention because of his leadership.

“He was very instrumental to our qualification to the AFCON,” he said.

“Personally, I appreciate his impact on the team not just for his football, but his leadership.

“He gives us more than what many cannot see.”

Osimhen is the leading scorer in the AFCON qualifiers with seven goals.

This will be his second AFCON after he featured briefly at the 2019 AFCON and then missed the delayed 2021 tournament due to injury.
