ACP shot as 15 feared dead in Edo cult war

The rival cult war in Edo state on Friday took a worrisome dimension after suspected cultists fired at a police team and injured an assistant commissioner of police and two other officers.

This was just an official of the University of Benin Teaching Hospital (UBTH) who asked not to be named in print confirmed that “some injured policemen were brought to the hospital’s Accident and Emergency ward this (Thursday) morning.”

Blueprint gathered that the unnamed ACP who is in charge of the Area Command, Benin City and his team were attacked at the Upper Sokponba road junction in Benin metropolis.

Police sources said the team was in the area to restore peace and order following reported bloody cult clashes and armed robbery.

Of the 15 deaths arising from the raging cult clashes between members of Black Axe and Eiye confraternity in the state, seven persons have been reportedly killed in Upper Sokponba.

On Wednesday, some armed men took over Upper Sokponba Road brandishing dangerous weapons and harassing motorists following the absence of security in the area.

Also, gunmen were alleged to have taken over Siluko Road and Isihor community, killing four persons on Wednesday.
