2023 election: Umeh’ s LP dislodges Ekwunife, returns to Senate

The Labour Party’s Senatorial candidate for Anambra Central, Senator Victor Umeh, has dislodged the incumbent Senator for the district, Uche Ekwunife of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

Umeh polled 103,608 votes to defeat the standard flag bearer of the All Progressive Grand Alliance (APGA), Hon. Dozie Nwankwo, who scored 69,702 votes and Ekwunife that got 49,532 votes to come third.

Ekwunife had consistently told the masses that if she returns to the Senate, she stood a greater chance of becoming first female Senate President of Nigeria.

Umeh, a former Senator of the zone and and former National Chairman of APGA was edged out in APGA’s primary election around May, 2022 in what he believed to be conspiracy by powers that be in the party.

The returning officer for the election, Prof Chuka Enuka, said All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate in the race, Chief Kodilichukwu Okelekwe had 8,204 votes and the Young Progressive Party (YPP) Candidate, Dr. Chinedu Umeadi got 6,909 votes.

Meanwhile, Senator Uche Ekwunife, in a statement signed by her media aide, Mr Kingsley Ubani, congratulated Chief Umeh on his success at the polls and urged the constituents and critical stakeholders in the zone to support the Senator-elect as he prepares to represent the people in the 10th Senate.

Similarly, the Labour Party’s House of Representatives candidate for Awka North and South federal Constituency, Professor Lilian Orogbu, has been declared winner of the election.

The Returning officer for the election, Mr Uche Nriagu, declared that Orogbu gathered 29,629 votes to defeat Hon. Obi Nwankwo of APGA that recorded 18,081 votes, and Chief Emeka Igwe of PDP that had 9,459 votes.

Speaking on the election, Professor Orogbu, thanked God that the will of the people prevailed after three days, and assured of her desire to fulfil her six-point agenda, which includes lawmaking, motions and bills that will impact the life of the people.
