Ahead of the 2015 general elections, the Kwara state council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) is to hold a work shop for practising journalists in the state towards effective coverage of the polls.

Similarly, the union is to embark on a procession to observe this year’s World Press Freedom Day on Saturday.
The programmes were part of activities lined up to mark the 2014 Press Week of the union which would commence on May 3, and end with a dinner and award night on May 15.

A statement by the Chairman and Secretary of the 2014 Press Week Committee, Malam Ali Muhammad Rabiu and Mr Babatunde Jimba, respectively, said the World Press Day events would be first of its kind in the state.

It stated that the theme of the workshop “The Effective Coverage of 2015 Elections and Media Importance in Developments,” was to prepare journalists for future challenges.
The statement added that the workshop would also focus on the “safety of journalists and the rule of law as well as the sustainability and integrity of journalism.”
