13th African Games: Aruna, Edem win two medals for Nigeria

The duo of Quadri Aruna and Offiong Edem have won two medals for Nigeria at the ongoing 13th African Games in Ghana.

African champion, Quadri Aruna lost to Egypt’s Omar Assar 3-4 in the men’s singles final to settle for silver medal while Offiong Edem settled for bronze medal in the women’s singles after losing to Egypt’s Dina Meshref 0-4 in the women’s singles semifinals match.

The five time All African Games champion attributed her performance to the last World Championship in Korea.

Edem said, “I am so happy that we were able to attend the last World Championships in Korea and this really helped my game a lot. I want to thank the Nigeria Table Tennis Federation (NTTF) for their support and I believe attending such competition really helped me personally here in Ghana”.

She explained that the North African side always outplay Nigeria at International championships due to their presence at World tournaments.

The Olympian said, “The Egyptians are ahead of us because they attend more competitions than us and we hope we can get more support to return to the top of the game in Africa”.
