100 Uni-Abuja students endure heavy rain for qualification interview

About 100 students of the University of Abuja, including disabled persons, defied the heavy rain and waited patiently under cold weather to attend the qualifying interview for this year’s Gani Fawehinmi scholarship which was conducted recently by a joint committee of the senior staff association and representatives of the late legal luminary.
Professor C. D.Chupi, a senior lecturer of the Geography Department, who was one of the officials short listing students for the interview at the Mini Campus of the institution, said during the award that the Gani Fawehinmi scholarship was set up five years ago pointing out that more than 200 indigent students in every academic discipline have so far benefitted from the programme.
He also disclosed that twenty students received full scholarship from last year’s edition of the programme covering tuition, hostel accommodation, feeding and sundry expenses while about 50 students are expected to be approved for the scheme this year.
Some students who spoke to our correspondent on the benefits of the scholarship commended the late Gani Fawehinmi for setting up the programme and called on other wealthy Nigerians to emulate the gesture by assisting less-privileged citizens actualise their desires for education or to acquire skills.
One of the students, Loti Zubairu described the scholarship as a commendable initiative declaring that illiteracy and unemployment can be wiped out completely from the country when wealthy citizens assist poverty-stricken people who desire to go to school or acquire skills to become self-sufficient and move out of joblessness.
Another student, Ibrahim M. Shelling described the scholarship as a good development especially as it covered every academic discipline and the entire aspects of students’ need rather than being restricted to tuition fees alone.
He urged needy students to take advantage of the programme and to properly utilise the opportunity and the funds provided to study rather than engaging in unethical activities like cultism and examination malpractices on campus.
