Senator Orji retains Abia Central seat


Senator Theodore A Orji and former governor of Abia state has been re-elected to represent Abia Central Senatorial district in the National Assembly in the next political dispensation.

Senator Orji of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) polled 55,461 votes to defeat his closest rival, Senator Nkechi Nwaogu of the All Progressives Congress (APC) who came second with 29,860 votes. While Mr Onyeukwu Chidi Ajaegbu of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) came third with 19,534 votes.

Announcing the result, the returning officer for Abia Central senatorial district, Professor Yusuf Ndukaku, said that the former governor and the PDP candidate, Senator Orji having secured the highest numbers of valid votes cast is declared the winner of Abia Central senatorial district and is returned elected.

Similarly, another former governor of Abia state Dr Orji Uzor Kalu (1999-2007) has won the Abia North senatorial district election on the platform of the APC.

He defeated the incumbent, Senator Mao Ohuabunwa of the PDP with 31,203 votes to 20,801 votes, while Dr Bourdex Ogba Onuoha of the APGA polled 11,410 votes to come third among the three major parties in the state.

Similarly, a member representing Ikwuano/Umuahia in the House of Representatives, Hon Sam I Onuigbo has been re-elected to represent his constituency in the National Assembly in the next four years.

Onuigbo, a member of the PDP defeated his closest rival, Hon Martins Ikechukwu Apugo, of the APC by 30,669 to 23,279 votes, while Macdonald Ubah of APGA secured 10,312 votes to place third.

Speaking on the victory of Senator T A Orji, Elder Okechukwu Egeonu lauded the people of the zone for re-electing his kinsman, saying that Orji has provided quality representations to the people.

He also commended the INEC for conducting a free, fair and credible election that saw the former governor’s re-election.
