Inter varsity unions decry omission from earned allowance

Two unions of the inter-university centres have appealed to the organised labour to intervene in their continued exclusion from the earned allowances.

They are Non-Academic Staff Union (NASU) and the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU).

Chairman of NASU, Nigerian French Language Village branch, made the appeal Wednesday in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria in Badagry, Lagos state.

He said, their members were excluded from the allowances twice, in spite of the leading roles they played in the negotiations with the federal government, and decried the continued neglect of the union members.

The chairman said that the inter-university centres omitted from the earned allowance were Nigeria French Language Village, Badagry, Lagos; National Mathematical Centre, Abuja and the Nigeria Arabic Language Village, Ngala, Maiduguri.

Others are National Institute for Nigerian Languages, Aba, Abia and the Nigerian Institute of Advanced Legal Studies, Akoka, Yaba, Lagos.

He said the affected institutions met in Abuja and made appeal for their inclusion in the November 2017 and January16, 2019, while government had also promised to release N20bn in February for all categories of staff of federal universities.”

“We plead to the authorities concerned to prevail on the officials in charge of the disbursement of the earned allowances not to exclude us any longer from what is due to us.

“We have exploited every available peaceful means to make our members get their entitlements, none has yet paid off.”

Zannu said that members of the unions would not give up until their yearnings were met.

He promised that their members would not down tools in spite of being excluded from the allowances.

“It certainly will not be in the best interest of our students because as parents, we consider the plights our students will face if we embark on such action.

“We also consider the fate of our various institutions, especially as we are getting their support to press for our rights.”

He urged the national body of NASU and SSANU to prevail on the authorities so that their members would be included.
