FAO to spend $91m on humanitarian programmes, resilience agriculture, launches 5-year Nigeria programme framework

The Food and Agriculture Organisation  (FAO ) of the United Nations (UN) said it has an estimated budget requirement of about $91.42 million to implement humanitarian programmes in the next four years.

This is even as it has officially launch a 5-year country programme frame which will define and guide it activities, partnership and collaboration with the Nigeria government on agriculture and food security.

Speaking at the launch of the Nigeria Country Programming Framework  (CPF) 2018-2022, in Abuja on Tuesday, Nigeria Representative of FAO, Mr. Suffyan Koroma, said $43.22 million out of the total budget is available, leaving a deficit of $48.20 million. It also said that $23.27 million is expected from voluntary contributions,  $21.81 will be provided through South -South Cooperation funding, while $3.164 million will come from FAO  Technical Cooperation Programmes.

Koroma said its projection was influenced by the fact that Nigeria like other Lake Chad countries have been identified as a pilot country for the implementation of its humanitarian Development Nexus.

“A total of $91.42 million  will be required for the implementation during the programming period ( 2018-2022), out of which USD 43.22 million is available,  and thus leaving a deficit of USD 48.20 million.

“Of the total resources to mobilised, about $23.27 million is expected from voluntary contributions, $21.81 million from South -South Cooperation (SCC) funding and $3.164 million from FAO Technical Cooperation Programmes (TCPs )”, he said.

Koroma noted that the programme will focus on addressing the areas that touch the Sustainable Development Goals  (SDGs), especially the most vulnerable population that have been devastated by both human and natural disasters.

He stated that the programme was designed to mitigate effects of hardship of population in Nigeria that are increasingly exposed to natural hazards and man made crises.

He said, “FAO will also promote gender responsive community based forest management practices and technically advise in programme launch and implementation”.
