Yahaya Bello: Nigeria is a democratic nation, respect court order, group tells EFCC

A coalition of a civil society in collaboration with Northern Patriotic Front on Thursday said Nigeria is a democratic nation, urging the Economic and Financial Crime Commission (EFCC) to respect an order of a High Court, Lokoja, restraining the commission from arresting the former governor, Yahaya Bello.

Speaking with journalists in Abuja at a press conference, Thursday, a media consultant to the front, Alhaji Salmon Salami, said the commission must obey the order of a court of a competent jurisdiction as obtainable in a democratic society.

He said the issues bothered on the fundamental human rights of the former governor as a Nigerian, stressing that unless and until such order was vacated by the commission, it cannot arrest the former governor.

According to Salami, contrary to media trials,Yahaya Bello is not a criminal and so cannot be hiding.

“Yahaya Bello having served eight years as governor, is a golden fish that has no hiding place. He is not a criminal and cannot be on the run.

“We are calling on the Economic and Financial Crime Commission (EFCC) to respect a subsisting court order from a competent jurisdiction restraining the commission from arresting the former governor.

“EFCC should stop the media trials of the former governor and seek to vacate the order of Court, unless and until that is done, the fundamental human rights of the former Governor must be upheld”.
