World Social Justice Day: AIN laments continuous human right abuses, violation

Amnesty International (AIN) has expressed worry that social justice in Nigeria continued to be a major dominant feature of human right abuses and violation.

The Chairperson of AIN, Auwal Musa Rafsanjani, at the Amnesty International’s World Social Justice Day 2023 commemoration and farewell of it Country Director, said, “Until we are able to deal with issues of social justice in this country, it will be difficult for Nigerians to realize their potential to compete favourably, participate in governance process in Nigeria.”

He lamented that because as a lot of injustice some Nigerians cannot even contest election, peacefully go out and vote because some people who want to terminate their lives as they threaten them.

“We just got threats from some groups saying that they have declared a three day lockdown that nobody should go out and vote during the election. That is not fair.

“They have their right to refuse to participate in the election but do not stop other people who are interested in participating. So both non-state actors and the state actors continue to perpetuate injustice in Nigeria, and we need to realise that that is a breach of the fundamental right of the people.

“There is need for the security sector reform in this country and there is need for the police to restore the dignity of Nigerian Police. We cannot afford to have our police officers carrying handbags of criminals,” he said .
