UniAbuja launches diploma in complementary, alternative medicine 

University of Abuja Thursday held the maiden National Conference on Complementary and Alternative Medicine with the theme: “Herbal medicine the panacea for health in Africa.”

In his welcome remarks, the vice chancellor, University of Abuja, Professor Abdul-Rasheed Na’Allah, represented by the deputy vice chancellor, administration, Professor Sadique Abba, said the institution which is one of the first university medical sciences in Nigeria has unfolded plans for the establishment of diploma in complementary and alternative medicine.

“This comes with thrilled news of interest of the university for the introduction of complementary and alternative medicine in the university’s curriculum. We are indeed very glad for the opportunity today for the launch of diploma in complementary and alternative medicine programme for the benefit of the university of Abuja community,” he said.

He appreciated members of the council, pointing out that, this has come at the time when the university was putting all necessary resources together to ensure a smooth take off of the programme in the university.

Understanding the importance of complementary and alternative medicine, the VC said most drugs used to treat malaria are roots and herbs, processed abroad and sold to us at high price.

The guest speaker at the occasion, Professor Martins Emeje,  said there has been a transformation in the world view of  indigenous medicinal plants.
