Uneasy calm as suspected herders kill 2 farmers in Oyo community

There is an uneasy calm in Igangan community of Oyo state over the killing of two farmers by suspected herders on Friday.

The two farmers were said to have been killed by the suspected herders while returning home from their farm with one of the farmers identified as Seun having his head cut open with matchete by his attackers.

It was gathered from sources in Igangan that trouble started after the visit of a community leader in the area, Chief Sunday Adeyemi Igboho, to the town during which he reportedly cautioned the Seriki Fulani in the town Saliu Kadri, against the rising cases in the killings of the indigenes in the community by suspected herdsmen.

The visit it was learnt resulted into serious altercation with some of the Seriki Fulani’s boys trooping out before they started attacking Yoruba farmers on sight during which the two farmers were reportedly killed.

According to the Convener of Igangan Development Advocates, Oladiran Oladokun, “Sunday Igboho came to Igangan today (Friday) and went to Kara market because that is where they use to perpetrate atrocities. Ibarapa people have all agreed that Kara markets should be closed so that crime would reduce.”

“He also went to Seriki’s settlement to confront him. After he left, the Seriki’s boys trooped out and hacked four persons returning from farm; two of them have died,” he said.

Oyo State Police Command Public Relations Officer, CSP Lawrence Fadeyi, in his reaction said Chief Adeyemo Igboho went to the Fulani camp in the town on Friday and injured four persons, saying, “today ( Friday) at about 6pm, the popular Sunday Igboho from Igboho town stormed the Fulani camp at Igangan with his men in four Hilux pickup vans and attacked the people, injuring four persons.”

“He then warned them to vacate the camp in seven days or be forcefully evicted. The injured were taken to the hospital for treatment. Police patrol vehicle has been deployed to the area. Investigation has commenced into the matter,” he said.
