Umahi to INEC, security agencies: sign Peace Accord

Governor David Umahi of Ebonyi state has called on Security agencies and Independent National Electoral commission (INEC) to sign undertaken for peaceful conduct of the  general elections come February and March this year.

Umahi who disclosed this at the Exco Chambers, Government House Abakaliki where he signed a Peace Accord for the elections said that the actual people that should sign it are INEC and security agencies.

He said: “This Peace Accord has been signed in the national level; I think this signing by the political parties is wrong, it should be done by Independent National Electoral commission INEC and security agencies that should be signing this peace accord.

“They should be signing undertaking that they will conduct themselves fairly and honestly in the discharge of their duties and not the political parties.

“We have no guns, we have no powers. I will ask nationally that security agencies and INEC should also sign undertaking to conduct free and fair elections; to safe guard the unity, integrity and oneness of this country.”

Earlier Mrs Jennify Adibe, chairman of Inter-party Advisory Council in  Ebonyi state, said that the council organized a peace pact program on 20th December, where all gubernatorial candidates in the state signed a peace accord, but Governor Umahi who is the Peoples Democratic party flag bearer and Senator Sunni Ogbuorji of All progressive Congress were not in attendance.

Adibe however, explained that out of about 32 political parties that have gubernatorial candidates in Ebonyi state, 26 signed the accord.

She gave the names of the political parties that did not sign to include All progressives party (APC), Social Democratic party (SDP), Advanced Congress of Democracy (ACD), United Political party (UPP),  Zenith Labour Party (ZLP), and DPP respectively.
