Spate of litigations from 2023 elections threat to electoral processes – Barau

The Deputy President of the Senate , Senator Barau Jibrin, has said spate of litigations emanating from the just concluded 2023 general elections are threat to the integrity of electoral processes in the country.

Jibrin noted this at ongoing national conference of the Supreme Council for Shari’ah in Nigeria (SCSN) at the National Mosque, Abuja, with the theme, “Matters arising from 2023 elections and associated socio-economic challenges” adding that litigations significantly strain the judicial system and threatens to undermine the integrity of the e the electoral process.”

Jibrin, who was represented by Special Adviser on Policy and Monitoring to the Deputy President of the Senate, Professor Bashir Mohammed Fagge, said to curb this, the National Assembly would review the country’s electoral legal framework “with a view to limiting frivolous lawsuits”.

He said the reforms would aim at ensuring that only genuine grievances proceed to tribunals while maintaining access to justice.

While speaking on the drastic increase in prices, the president of the Supreme Council for Shari’ah in Nigeria (SCSN), Sheikh AbdrRasheed Hadiyatullah, expressed concerns on the drastic increase in prices in the country, lamenting that, ”What used to cost 200 naira is now being sold at 2000 naira.

He said Nigeria’s current state is marked by cash scarcity, unemployment, and economic challenges.

“The council’s initial support for the government, advocating for a Muslim-Muslim ticket. However, he pointed out that the suffering of Nigerians has escalated since President Tinubu assumed office”.

Also the former Governor of Zamfara state, Senator Ahmad Yerima, emphasized the dangers posed by individuals falsely claiming to be Islamic scholars on social media, urging Nigerians to be cautious.

He highlighted the conference’s aim to address these challenges and draw attention to the perils of following unqualified individuals who misrepresent Islam on digital platforms.”
