Scarcity: Yobe water corporation increases diesel supply

In a bid to address the persistent water scarcity plaguing Damaturu, the capital of Yobe State, the General Manager (GM) of the State Water Corporation, Engr. Mahdi Baba Zarma has announced a significant increase in diesel supply.

A statement issued by the agency’s media department on Friday, quoted Zarma speaking after he had a closed-door meeting with the state Governor, Mai Mala Buni, and stakeholders in the water sector.

Zarma, who revealed that the monthly diesel allocation has been raised from 40,000 to 60,000 litres, attributed the water scarcity to the destruction of critical parts of the 330KV electricity transmission line by unknown vandals, leaving many boreholes reliant solely on generators for operation.

He assured residents of the state that the increased diesel supply would facilitate the powering of all existing and functional boreholes in the affected areas.

The GM, however, pledged transparency in the distribution and disbursement process, involving community participation to ensure accountability.

Zarma expressed confidence that the intervention of Governor Buni, for the Yobe State Water Corporation to urgently distribute the additional diesel to affected boreholes in Damaturu and its environs, would alleviate the water scarcity problem significantly.

He also reminded residents of the state’s regulations regarding the drilling of private boreholes, and emphasised the importance of seeking approval from the corporation before embarking on such projects, underscoring the need for adherence to established guidelines and permits.
