Emir of Kano, Alhaji Muhammadu Sanusi II, has called on influential politicians, including Governor Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, wealthy individuals and emirs, to marry more than one wife as a way of reducing the huge number of divorcees in the society.

Speaking shortly after presiding over the wedding fatiha of some divorcees held at the Kano central mosque yesterday as part of the mass wedding exercise cutting across all the 44 local government areas in the state, Sanusi said Islam had forbidden all form of persecution by spouses.

He said the marriage institution had been bastardised by those who considered unnecessary polygamy to massage their ego, which ultimately ended up in persecuting the female partners, adding that the Committee set up by the Kano Emirate Council was meant to inject sanity into the system in line with the Sharia legal system.

He said Islam had forbidden being polygamous by one who lacked the means to sustain the marriage and ensure fairness, stressing that it was also forbidden in Islam “for one to breed children that cannot be well brought up and ended up becoming public nuisance.”

The monarch said as leader and father of the society, he would never allow himself to be part of “the grand conspiracy to persecute women by their husbands” as he would be made to stand before God to account,  adding that he and Governor Ganduje were ready to resist such persecution.
In his remarks, Governor Ganduje said in as much as one believed that his wife was equivalent to four added together, it was not mandatory to add another one to make them five.

He called on the new spouses to tamper justice with mercy in living as husbands and wives devoid of persecution, oppression and tyranny, stressing that with the Islamic code passed into law, the institution of marriage would be effectively sanitised in line with the provisions of the Sharia Legal System.
