The Northern State Governors’ Forum (NSGF) yesterday called on Fulani herdsmen to help in exposing deviants in their midst and encourage their wards in their educational pursuit.
This is even as the Adamawa state Governor Murtala Nyako was conspicuously missing at the meeting where the 19 states governors deliberated on the incessant clashes between herdsmen and farmers in the north.
The governors also expressed gratitude to the federal government for drawing up an action plan (short, medium and long term) to address the issues of grazing reserves, cattle routes and provision of amentities in their settlements to encourage transition to intensive sedentary system of livestock production where pasture is sown and harvested.
These were part of the resolutions reached after a meeting between the governors and the Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria (MACBAN) and other associations.
Reading the communique after the meeting, the chairman of the forum and Governor of Niger state, Dr Mu’azu Babangida Aliyu, said after receiving presentations from the Myetti Allah Cattle Breeders and other Fulani associations on the cause of lingering disputes with farmers, the forum resolved that “member states should hold meetings with relevant stakeholders in their respective states with a view to searching for lasting peace.”
It said: “Meanwhile, states would individually exploit the potentials of the various groups and use every means at its disposal to implement recommendations of ameliorating the problem.”
