National Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA) has mobilised the agency’s dredger to carry out maintenance dredging on Ajaokuta-Onitsha waterways to ensure smooth navigation of barges and vessels.
Inaugurating the dredging committee in Lokoja, the NIWA Managing Director, Barrister Boss Mustapha, said the initiative was part of his efforts aimed at repositioning the Authority to carry out its core mandate of providing navigation on the waterways every year.

Mustapha assured that he would ensure that all NIWA equipment would be handled by NIWA staff as he had observed that the Authority had capable hands that can handle its equipment, saying that there would be no room for redundancy throughout his regime.
He maintained that in order to keep the Ajaokuta-Onitsha waterways navigable, maintenance dredging would be carried out regularly and would be extended to other water channels from time to time.
