Niger pensioners protest unpaid pension, gratuity

Pensioners in Niger state Monday protested the unpaid pensions and gratuities for over seven years by the state government.  They blocked the gate of the Government House and disrupted the swearing -in ceremony of local government council chairmen in Minna.

The protesters denied the new chairmen and their well wishers access into the venue of the ceremony.

One of the pensioners, Abubakar Abdullahi, who spoke to journalists accused the government of insensitivity, adding that government has shown the highest level of insensitivity over the issue for the past seven years.

“This government has neglected us all these years. How can you owe people for 7 years and still have the mind to be leaving office as if nothing is wrong?

He said, “The federal government released Paris funds and other funds to this state but we can’t see anything that was done with the funds, neither did they deem it fit to reduce the backlog of our pensions and gratuities.”
