A non-governmental organization, Rule of Law and Anti Corruption (ROLAC) has concluded plans to open a register for interpreters of a sign language between the law enforcement agents, Courts and the people with the special needs particularly those with hearing disability in Kano State.
The state Programme Coordinator, Ibrahim Bello disclosed this interview shortly after the opening of a two day training for 20 youth on sign language interpretation to ease the communication gab between the two parties, saying that lack of interpreting the language to both communities is creating a lots of conflicts.
He said there was the need for provision for interpreters in Court’s and police stations across the state to assist in translating the laws into the understanding the provision of law promoting the right of women, Children and person with disabilities in Kano State.
He said the programme was funded by European union and manage by British Council is to equip the participants with the back communication towards knowledge of interpretation of the laws to ease the communication.
On her part ROLAC Consultant, , Madam Zuwaira muhammad Ibrahim said the programme was aimed to educate the participants on the exiting laws protecting the children, women and the people withe disabilities particularly those with hearing defamation in order to provide interpreter towards translating the laws.
She commended the state governor Dr. Abdullahi Umar Ganduje for signing a law for people with the disability, therefore the essence of the training is to educate the youth on how to translate the laws into signing language to the people with the disabilities on what they will enjoy on the law’s and advised the government to ensure provide free education. Commenting on the workshop a participant Rabiu Aliyu Adam, Youth Leader People with the hearing disability described the training as a remarkable development in the area of interpretation for the people with the special needs in reducing the problems of understanding among the communities.
