Nasarawa Assembly tasks media executives on developmental journalism

The chairman, Nasarawa state House of Assembly Committee on Information, Mohammed Adamu- Omadefu, has advised media executives and other practitioners to promote developmental journalism to enhance peace, unity and progress in the society.

Adamu –Omadefu, representing APC-Keana state constituency, made the call on Thursday when the state Commissioner for Information, Comrade Dogo Shammah and the General Manager, Nasarawa Broadcasting Service (NBS), Barr Yusuf Musa, defended their 2020 budgets at the state Assembly.

Omadefu underscored the significance of information in societal development, stressing that @if information is wrongly managed, it will cause a lot of damage in the society.”

“There is the need for information managers, especially media executives and those saddled with information gathering and dissemination to be more proactive and guard against fake news,” he said

Adamu- Omadedu expressed satisfaction with the explanation on 2020 budget proposals of both the information ministry and Nasarawa state Broadcasting Service (NBS) and urged them to ensure that government activities were adequately publicised.

The chairman assured of the committee’s readiness to do justice to their budgets for the overall peace and progress of the state.

Earlier, the state Commissioner for Information, Comrade Dogo Shammah, appreciated the committee for always giving attention to the ministry.

He said enhancing developmental journalism and tackling growing trends of fake news were priorities in his administration’s blue print for development to thrive in the state.

The commissioner commended the working relationship between the executive and legislative arms of government in the state, saying it had given room for speedy development and called for its sustenance.

The commissioner also assured of the ministry’s continued commitment to boost tourism and cultural heritage in order to boost the revenue drive and overall development of the state.

 On his part, the General Manager of NBS, Barr Yusuf Musa, who gave the total breakdown of his station’s 2020 budget, revealed that Outside Broadcast (OB) van and other equipment were the major challenges of the station.
