Zubairu M. Balannaji, popularly known as Balannaji, is a talented film writer, continuity and production manager; in his brief chitchat with IBRAHIM HAMISU in Kano, he speaks on his biography and how he has written between 35 and 40 movies in Kannywood.
Background/history
Firstly, my name is Zubairu M. Balannaji. I am a Hausa book and film writer, as well as a film producer.
Certainly, my life’s journey began with my birth in Kano. I grew up there and still reside with my parents and siblings. I started my education at Fedwa Nursery International School, followed by Demonstration Primary School in FCE Kano. After completing my secondary education at Staff Secondary School in FCE, I returned to pursue my NCE studies, finishing in 2014/2015.
How did you find yourself in Kannywood?
My passion for reading and watching movies from childhood led me to become a writer. I wrote and published books, eventually developing an interest in film writing. Attending workshops and seminars on film writing, I got trained alongside other writers. One day, film director and producer, Aminu I. Tahir, contacted me after reading my book, Karshen Butulu, and expressed interest in turning it into a film. That marked my entry into Kannywood.
The Kannywood industry is vast; what do you specialise in?
I specialise in film writing, overseeing programme development, especially continuity, and now, I’ve expanded my focus to film producing.
How many movies have you written so far?
I can’t provide an exact figure, but I estimate I’ve written between 35 and 40 movies.
How many films have you produced?
I’ve produced one film, Kan Ta Kile, which is an on-going long-term project. There are plans to start other projects soon, God-willing.
