Mount compounds Manchester United injury woes

Manchester United midfielder Mason Mount has added to Erik ten Hag’s injury woes, as the former Chelsea star suffers a fresh setback at his new club.

Mount faces an extended spell on the sidelines due to a fresh calf injury, exacerbating his manager’s injury crisis and keeping him out of action for up to a month. The timing is unfortunate as it will see him miss key fixtures, including a crucial Champions League game against Galatasaray and a reunion with his former club Chelsea on December 6.

Ten Hag, speaking to United’s official media, said: “Mason picked up an issue so we have to assess if he’s available for the game or not.”

Mount has had a difficult start to life at Old Trafford and has been restricted to just 12 appearances, most of them from the bench, since his initial £55 million move from Chelsea in the summer. His last start came against Brentford on October 7 after he recovered from an injury that he sustained in late August. The 24-year-old hasn’t scored at all in 2023, with his only assist for United coming in the League Cup back in September.

Mount’s absence adds to a growing list of sidelined players, including Rasmus Hojlund, Casemiro, Lisandro Martinez, Christian Eriksen, Amad Diallo, and Tyrell Malacia. In the absence of Eriksen, the midfielder looked set for a start against Everton, but the injury now forces Ten Hag to chalk out an alternative blueprint. This comes ahead of a busy schedule which will see the Red Devils take in three games within the space of a week.
